About Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a former country of Yugoslavia consisting of 10 cantons. It is located in Southeastern Europe with neighboring countries Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro. The most important cantons are Tuzla, Sarajevo, and Zenica-Doboj. The nation has a surface area of 51,129 square kilometers and is, therefore, one of the medium-sized countries in Europe. Its geography is dominated by mountains and valleys. The climate is mainly Mediterranean and continental with 4 distinct seasons.

The overall population is 3.8 million people. The capital of the country is Sarajevo, which is also the most populous city with 275,000 inhabitants. Other major cities are Banja Luka and Tuzla. The largest airport is Sarajevo International Airport (SJJ) with 1.1 million yearly passengers. This makes it the 24th busiest airport in the Balkans. Sarajevo Airport has excellent flight connections to the entire European Union.

Bosnia’s culture is dominated by a mix of languages and Balkan cultures. Islam is the main religion to 50% of the population. The official languages are Bosnian, Serbian, and Croatian. The legal system is the civil law with the constitutional court reviewing legislative acts. The government type is a parliamentary republic. The chief of state is the chairman of the presidency Sefik Dzaferovic. The head of government is the chairman of the Council of Ministers Zoran Tegeltija. The elections take place every 4 years and the president is elected directly via popular vote.

The official currency of the country is the Bosnian Convertible Mark (BAM) with the current exchange rate being BAM 1.78 to the USD. The country has an open economy, generating a GDP of approximately $28.4 billion. Its citizens have a per capita income of $8,223. The GDP is mostly made up of 3 key sectors which are agriculture, industry followed by tourism. Bosnia’s main goods of exports are wheat, corn, steel, coal, and wooden furniture.

Bosnia & Herzegovina is filled with a variety of urban and natural tourism destinations and attractions. It is one of the fastest-growing tourism destinations in Europe. Some of the major cities include the capital Sarajevo and Mostar. Other destinations are the Doboj fortress, the salt lakes of Tuzla, and the Tara river canyon. The nation has a total of approximately 1.8 million tourists visiting every year. Most tourists originate from Europe and its surrounding countries making it a very popular destination, especially for regional visitors.
