Mozambique Approves Visa Exemption Decree For 28 Countries

Today, 14 March 2023, the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Mozambique approved a decree that establishes a list of countries whose nationals will not need a visa to enter the country for business or tourism purposes. 

This way, holders of ordinary passports from 28 countries around the world will be able to benefit from visa-free travel to Mozambique. 

The visa exemption will only be valid for short stays, though. As official sources have clarified, it will only allow for 30-day stays. After that time, foreign visitors can renew the exemption to stay for an additional 60-day period. In total, the maximum amount of time that travelers can spend in Mozambique without a visa will be 90 days.

In order to be able to access this benefit, people with an intention of traveling to Mozambique will have to register on an electronic visa platform for pre-screening, and pay a processing fee with a value of 650 MZN (about 10.17 USD). This process can be done up to 48 hours before traveling to the country.

The list of visa-exempt countries includes the following territories:

• France
• Germany

• Indonesia
• Israel
• Italy
• Ivory Coast
• Japan
• Netherlands
• Norway
• Portugal
• Russia
• Saudi Arabia
• Senegal
• Singapore
• South Korea
• Spain
• Sweden
• Switzerland
• Ukraine
• United Arab Emirates
• United Kingdom
• United States of America

With this list, Mozambique has taken a step forward in implementing measure 13 of the Economic Acceleration Measures Package (PAE), which was announced by President Nyusi in August 2022 and contains a total sum of 20 measures aimed at making the country more competitive and accessible to both visitors and investors.

Mozambique also has a list of countries for which a visa waiver applies (except for work, residence, and study reasons). These countries are Angola, Botswana, Cabo Verde, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, South Africa, Seychelles, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. 

This visa waiver is also available for holders of ordinary passports from Kenya, and for people from Brazil, Cuba, and Portugal with diplomatic and service passports.
